Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I miss the sign up date?

Our program runs during the winter and spring months (January-May). The sign up deadline is in place because it takes us some time to coordinate getting all of the seed potatoes we need, packaging them up and having them shipped to you. If you miss the sign up deadline please contact our office. We will do our best to work with you, but we cannot guarantee we’ll have seed potatoes at that time.

Is this is an individual project or group project?

This program was designed as a group project which is why we ask you how many classrooms, and not individual students, you will be doing this program with.

Can I do this program during the summer?

We always encourage the education of Wisconsin potatoes, but the Kids Dig Program is tailored towards classroom growing during the winter and spring months.

How many seed potatoes can I expect to receive?

You will receive three seed potatoes per classroom as this program was designed as a group project instead of an individual project. You are, however, encouraged to cut your seed potatoes in half.

When should I expect to receive our seed potatoes?

You should expect to receive your seed potatoes sometime during the second to third weeks in January. We cannot always give an exact date of delivery when you sign up for our program because delivery is weather dependent. If the temperatures are going to be too cold we have to postpone shipping so your seed potatoes do not freeze and consequently rot.

How are our seed potatoes delivered?

Your seed potatoes will be delivered directly to your school via Spee-Dee Delivery. We use this service because they guarantee next day delivery, which is very important when shipping seed potatoes because they cannot sit in our harsh winter conditions very long without climate control.

What should I do if I receive my seed potatoes, but they are rotten?

We always strive to send the best quality Wisconsin seed, but sometimes our harsh Wisconsin winters can affect the condition in which your seed arrives. Please contact our office if you receive your seed potatoes rotten so we can do our best to replace them for you.

Do I need to use a grow light?

A grow light is recommended because potatoes need up to 16 hours of sunlight per day. If you choose not to use a grow light your potatoes will grow, but be aware that you may not receive the best growing results.
